# Better Segments or Tags?

Hi everyone!

When a “contact” opens an email and clicks on a link, is it better to add **tags** to identify this action or add it to a **segment**?

I understand that if we segment it in multi-stage funnels there would be many segments and this would, in part, affect the performance of Mautic.

**Better Segments or Tags?**

I would love to hear opinions as I’m just a beginner in this automated marketing stuff, I’m all about the technical side. 😜

I started out segmenting everything and ran in to performance issues die to having so many segements.

I know use tags due to their versatility, and they almost tell their own story of a contact at a glance when looking at the tag cloud of a contact.
