# How to Downgrade Mautic

It looks like many users are having challenges with the latest releases, 2.6 and 2.6.1.
If your Mautic update proceeded successfully in general, but you’re encountering a bug with a certain feature - it may be worthwhile taking a look at this method to [downgrade your installation to a previous version](https://autoize.com/downgrade-mautic/).
Ideally, you should always have a backup before undertaking a software update - but we know it isn’t a perfect world. ![;)]( ";)")
If you’re thinking about upgrading Mautic, here are some [steps you can take](https://autoize.com/ensure-successful-mautic-upgrade/) to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible.
Why is a **full backup** really important before updating? If the process is interrupted in any way, especially during a critical step where files are being copied or the database is being written to, your Mautic instance may become crashed. The only way to restore your instance to the point where you left off may be a backup.
Here are the components of a full Mautic backup:
**Export of your Mautic database** , colloquially called a dump (.sql or .sql.gz file)
**Config file** - /path/to/mautic/app/config/local.php file
**Media directory** - /path/to/mautic/media
**Themes directory** - /path/to/mautic/themes
**Plugins directory** - /path/to/mautic/plugins (Only third party plugins that didn’t ship with Mautic)

So are Mautic updates actually beta versions of the software?

@charlescorn update are not beta versions.
@autoize We know that no software comes free of some error but with this post, you are encouraging the user to downgrade Mautic instead of encouraging Mautic to improvements in the road map.
I dont think this post will help the community.

The database schema changes made from 2.5.x to 2.6.x are significant.
If you don’t have a backed up version of your 2.5.x database to reinstall then you’re out of luck downgrading from 2.6.x.
