Open Startup Report #31 - September 2025

Originally published at: Open Startup Report #31 - September 2025 - Mautic

Our Mautic community has been growing steadily through the third quarter of 2025, and as we look back on September, I’ve been reflecting on the nature of sustainability, not just in terms of financial runway, but in the deeper sense of creating consistent, mindful engagement.

In my recent experience, what I’ve learned is that genuine sustainability is built on small, consistent inputs rather than giant, unpredictable surges. It’s the daily work of kindness, the steady commitments from contributors, members and sponsors, the persistent focus on digital sovereignty that truly builds enduring projects and communities.

The broader implication is that every contributor, every sponsor, and every individual who chooses Mautic over closed platforms is making an affirmative decision for digital independence. This is a quiet, profound act of building the infrastructure for a more ethical digital world.

I’m curious about how you, our community, view the metrics in this report as reflections of our collective health. Feel free to drop a comment via the companion post on the forums.

Financial overview

September was a month of significant incoming contributions and necessary, planned expenditure.

We have had another month where our expenditure ($12,766.54) exceeded our income ($7068.23), which is becoming more of a concern given we have very little financial buffer. While we have planned income in our budget to address this shortfall, we should be mindful that we’re ‘sailing close to the wind’ and may therefore have to review our budget into 2026 accordingly.

The income this month has mostly been from Mautic World Conference sponsorships and also some revenue from our trials. Our outgoings are all standard planned expenses.

Here is the breakdown of our finances for the month:

Usage of Mautic

The stability in our usage metrics reflects the commitment of marketing teams and agencies choosing digital independence. While the number of trial signups saw a slight month-over-month dip, the year-over-year growth shows a solid upward trend. Most importantly, the number of active, tracked sites which have Mautic tracking deployed (one measure we use to estimate the number of Mautic instances) remains fairly steady.

We’re also seeing a continued upward trend in people starring our main Mautic repository on GitHub which suggests developers are also taking notice.

Metric September 2025
Active Instances 29,555
Trial Signups 523
Web tracking new users 42,473
Web tracking returning users 5,452

The strong new user count for the website suggests that awareness of Mautic’s mission is reaching a wider audience, which is a key leading indicator for future growth and community contribution.

Community health

Our community is the project’s most vital asset, and the metrics here point toward a steady, encouraging trend of collective effort. The number of new contributors is climbing, which is a powerful validation of our welcoming and supportive environment.

The continued increase in GitHub stars is a public sign of Mautic’s growing mindshare in the open source and marketing technology worlds.

Metric September 2025 August 2025 September 2024 Source

Closing thoughts

The negative margin in our September finances is a valuable reminder that we must remain mindful about balancing investment and revenue, seeking sustainable, community-aligned funding sources across a wider base. Our momentum in community growth and in Mautic’s deployment footprint remains strong, powered by the collective wisdom and work of our contributors.

What is one thing – a small, steady contribution – you feel we, as a community, should focus on in the coming month to deepen our roots and strengthen our collective health?

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
