Mautic developer certification is coming!

Originally published at: https://mautic.org/blog/mautic-developer-certification-is-coming

Our Mautic community has been growing into a vibrant ecosystem where contributors from all over the world build integrations, extend our platform and help organizations reclaim their marketing independence.

From small startups to global enterprises, many choose Mautic for the flexibility and freedom that only open source can provide. Behind these successful implementations are talented developers who understand the platform deeply and know how to adapt it to solve real-world marketing challenges.

As we continue to grow, we’ve heard a question coming up more frequently in our conversations about how developers can demonstrate their expertise in a way that is trusted and recognized. Soon we will have an official answer.

We are proud to share that the Mautic developer certification will be launching soon. This program offers a formal way to validate your knowledge, showcase your experience and be recognized for your ability to build and extend solutions using Mautic.

Why certification matters

Our community grows stronger when we share knowledge and recognize the skills of our members. As more organizations adopt Mautic, they are looking for professionals who can configure, customize and extend the platform with confidence.

The Mautic developer certification is built to support both our contributors and the organizations within our ecosystem. For developers, it provides a structured path to demonstrate technical expertise and practical experience, which strengthens your credibility among colleagues and clients. For organizations, it provides a clear signal that a professional has the knowledge required to implement Mautic effectively, whether that involves complex integrations, performance optimization or advanced workflows.

This step reflects our collective growth and the increasing demand for skilled practitioners who truly understand what it means to build on an open platform.

What the certification will cover

The Mautic developer certification focuses on practical capabilities rather than just theoretical knowledge. We want the exam to reflect the actual work you do every day when building with Mautic.

The assessment will cover several key areas including

  • Configuring and setting up Mautic for diverse use cases
  • Optimizing performance for scalable automation
  • Building custom functionality and integrations
  • Diagnosing issues through debugging and troubleshooting
  • Applying development knowledge to real-world implementation scenarios

To ensure accessibility for our global community, the exam will be conducted online through a secure proctored environment. Our goal is to create an assessment that measures both technical depth and problem-solving ability.

Built for the Mautic community

This program is the result of close collaboration between the Mautic project and Axelerant. By combining community leadership with Axelerant’s experience in real world deployments, the certification establishes a credible benchmark for developer expertise.

This initiative is about more than a certificate. It is about strengthening the ecosystem. By supporting talent development and creating paths for professional recognition, we help ensure that the community continues to grow with skilled practitioners around the world.

Looking ahead, this is only the beginning of the certification program. In Q2 we also plan to introduce the Mautic Marketer Certification and the Mautic Integrator Certification, expanding opportunities for professionals across the ecosystem to demonstrate their expertise.

Launching March 15

The Mautic developer certification will officially launch on March 15.

In the coming days we’ll share more details about the program. This will include the exam structure, specific benefits and how you can register. For those of you who have spent years building with Mautic, this is a meaningful way to formally recognize that expertise. For organizations, it’s a new way to identify the professionals who can help you achieve digital sovereignty.

The next step in our journey together is almost here. We are looking forward to seeing our community members take this next step in their professional growth.

Hello,

It’s great news that Mautic is launching a developer certification for those who have been using and developing with Mautic for years and have a deep understanding of how the platform works under the hood. A certification program will not only recognise this expertise but also allow certified developers to demonstrate their skills and offer their experience to others in a professional, commercial context.

Could you please share when the certification training materials will be released? Many experienced developers in the community would welcome the opportunity to review the official materials, deepen their knowledge, and prepare to take the certification according to the program requirements.

At the moment, one challenge many users face is that parts of the documentation are out of date. This can make it difficult for developers and administrators to fully understand how certain components of Mautic work. In addition, while the community forums are intended to be a place where users help one another, it sometimes feels as though experienced users are less active there than in the past, and many valuable ideas or questions remain unanswered.

There is also a perception among some community members that a small number of people hold deep technical knowledge but prefer not to share it publicly on the forum. Instead, users occasionally receive private messages offering paid development services. While commercial services are a natural part of an open-source ecosystem, it would be beneficial if more knowledge and guidance were shared openly so the whole community can learn and grow.

This raises an important question about how the project can continue strengthening its open-source spirit. Mautic has always been most successful when users of all experience levels collaborate, share knowledge, and help each other solve problems.

It is also noticeable that some of the core developer contributors are not very active in the forums. Greater participation from experienced contributors could significantly benefit the community by helping users overcome technical challenges and by encouraging discussion around new ideas and improvements.

Overall, the new developer certification is a positive step forward for the Mautic ecosystem. With clear training materials, updated documentation, and continued engagement between contributors and the wider community, it could become an excellent opportunity to strengthen both the technical standards and the collaborative spirit of the project.

Thanks to the Mautic developer team for their hard work and hope they take a more active roll sharing there knowledge on the forum for the benefit of the wider community.

Hello, thank you for your message and for sharing your thoughts.

At the moment, we have published the Developer Certification Curriculum, which outlines the areas and skills the certification will cover. You can review it here: https://mau.tc/dev-certification

The certification is designed to validate practical experience working with Mautic, so there are currently no separate training materials planned. The curriculum is intended to help developers understand the scope of knowledge expected for the certification.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your feedback.

Hello,

The recent introduction of the developer certification by Mautic raises serious concerns about fairness and accessibility. While certification can be a positive step for standardising expertise, the current implementation appears to disadvantage new entrants significantly.

Most notably, there is no official training material provided as part of the certification pathway. At the same time, the existing developer documentation is outdated and insufficient for someone trying to learn the platform from scratch. This creates a situation where only core contributors, long-standing users, and established third-party developers—those who already possess deep, experience-based knowledge—are realistically able to pass the certification.

For newcomers, the barriers are compounded by the lack of meaningful support channels. Community forums, which should ideally serve as a resource for guidance, appear to offer limited help, leaving new developers without the support they need to progress.

As a result, the certification risks reinforcing an uneven playing field. Experienced developers gain yet another advantage, while new participants are effectively excluded. This not only discourages fresh talent from entering the ecosystem but also raises concerns about the underlying motivation—particularly if the certification is monetised, as it may generate revenue for Mautic without providing adequate educational support in return.

In its current form, the certification process does not seem aligned with the principles of openness and accessibility that are typically associated with open-source communities. Without proper training resources, up-to-date documentation, and active community support, it risks becoming a gatekeeping mechanism rather than a meaningful measure of developer capability.

Mautic should consider releasing approved training material at the same time as the certification to make the playing field equal for anyone wishing to become a certified developer.

Thanks.
