if you look at apps that use multi thread, there might be solutions
fump (which is the same as drqueck mailer and efump)
mailwizz
maborak interspire multi thread addon
kaviraj kodai hot scripts / parabots
then there may be a way to detach the sending from mautic by configuring a smart host, but you could help with that in the mautic config, then making it easy to just input what is needed and have a script to the smart host config for either postfix or exim or sendmail, whatever the server has or the user chooses (as most will not be able to do this by hand), even multiple smart hosts, with individual limits and assigned by domain would be thinkable
the above are just a few thoughts, surely you will have more when you are fully immersed in the development of these multi thread features
