SMTP is configured, the test works fine from the configuration page but emails will never go out…

Last time it happened to me was when I changed the email template directory name of an existing campaign.
Check the logs to see the detailed error messages
The logs indeed pointed me to the template
same happens for me and when i check the log find this
< 554 Message rejected: Email address is not verified. The following identities failed the check in region EU-WEST-1: weiuwyei@wyeiuwye.nl !! Expected response code 250 but got code “554”, with message "554 Message rejected: Email address is not verified. The following identities failed the check in region EU-WEST-1: weiuwyei@wyeiuwye.nl " (code: 554)
