Public Segments what does it actually do?

My Mautic version is:4.4.6
My PHP version is:8
My Database type and version is: mySQL

I am wondering what is the actual functionality of setting public segment to yes? I understand it’s to do with the preference center but what exactly?

Does it mean the segment will be available to any user within mautic? (by this i mean signed in users).
Or does it mean the contact will see that they are in this segment when they visit their preferences?

I’ve done some testing but I am flying blind

Hey,
Yes, public segments means, that your contact can see / choose this segment if you add segments to the preference page. The public name will be visible in the segment list.
